Understanding Smart Wallets

you're using a smart wallet, you're interacting with Web3—the next generation of the internet where users own their data and assets. Your wallet is the key to accessing this world.

Web3 Wallets in General: What They Are

A Web3 Wallet is a digital tool that lets you store, send, and receive cryptocurrencies and digital items (like NFTs). Crucially, a wallet doesn't technically hold your assets; it stores your private key, which proves you are the owner of those assets on the blockchain.

There are two main types of digital wallets in the world:

  • Traditional Wallet (External): Requires you to manage a secret seed phrase (a 12- or 24-word recovery phrase). If you lose it, your assets are gone forever.
  • Smart Contract Wallet (Sequence): A newer, more secure type of wallet that uses code (a "smart contract") instead of a single seed phrase. This allows for features like simplified recovery and paying transaction fees with different tokens.

What is the Sequence Wallet?

Sequence wallets are non-custodial Smart Contract Wallets. Non-custodial means that Sequence never has access to your private key or your funds—only you do.

Sequence offers two versions of this smart wallet technology, designed for different jobs:

Feature

The Embedded Wallet 🎮

The Sequence Universal Wallet 🌐

What It Is

The wallet built directly into a specific game, app, or marketplace.

The standalone app or web portal for managing all your crypto life.

Setup & Login

You simply log in with your social account (Google, Discord, etc.). It's created instantly in the background.

You download the app and set up a secure, primary Recovery Method.

Best Used For

In-app transactions—buying an item or making a trade without leaving the screen.

External connections—using WalletConnect to access any third-party Web3 site.

Key Advantage

Zero friction. No downloads, no seed phrase, and transactions are often free or seamless.

Full control. Your central hub for all assets, designed for maximum interoperability.

Which Sequence Wallet Do You Have? 🤔

Sequence offers two types of wallets. Both are secure, non-custodial Smart Contract Wallets, but they differ in their purpose and how they are used. Use this guide to quickly identify yours and understand what that means for you!

Sequence Universal Wallet (standalone wallet )🌐

This is the standalone product designed to be your primary, comprehensive control panel for the entire Web3 world.

Your Experience

What It Means

Setup & Location

You downloaded a separate app, browser extension, or use the dedicated web portal.

Asset Support

It typically supports a wide range of tokens and networks (like Ethereum, Polygon, etc.).

Connectivity

You use WalletConnect to approve connections to any compatible external site.

Embedded Wallet (The In-App Experience )🎮

This wallet is invisible, integrated directly into a single game, marketplace, or application. It is customized to prioritize a seamless, frictionless experience within that specific environment.

Your Experience

What It Means

Setup & Location

You log in with your social account (Google, Discord, etc.), and the wallet appears inside the app.

Asset Support

🛑 Only Supported Tokens. The game/app decides which tokens it supports. You should only send tokens or assets to this wallet that the game or app explicitly supports within its environment.

Limitations

You have less control over technical settings.

Final Clarification: Are They The Same?

No. Both are modern, secure Sequence Smart Wallets, but they are separate accounts with separate blockchain addresses.

  • You can have both: Many users start with the Embedded Wallet in a game, and later set up the Universal Wallet to manage their larger portfolio.
  • To move items between the two, you must perform a standard transfer transaction from one wallet address to the other.

‼️ Remember, your wallets are separate accounts. If you want to move assets between your game (Embedded Wallet) and your universal wallet, you must send a transfer transaction from one wallet address to the other. ‼️
